Sailors set up the Sea View showdown

Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team, led by 6-foot-3
senior middle blocker Kristin McClune’s 17 kills and seven service
aces, swept visiting Laguna Hills Thursday, 16-14, 15-7, 15-3 to
improve to 19-6 overall and 7-1 in the Sea View League. The Hawks
dropped to 1-7 in league.
Newport Harbor, which will play for first place on Tuesday against
visiting Woodbridge at 6:15 p.m., was also led by outside hitter
Alyson Jennings (seven kills and three aces) and setter Kellie King
(35 assists).
“We tried to give the first game away,” Newport Harbor Coach Dan
Glenn said.

TENNIS: Newport girls just miss
Newport Harbor High’s doubles team of Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson
won three sets and Bonnie Adams and Carly Adams won two of three sets
at No. 3 doubles, but it was not enough for the Sailors as they lost
a Sea View League girls tennis match to visiting Woodbridge Thursday,
10-8.
Newport falls to 7-2 in the Sea View League with Thursday’s loss,
two games off Woodbridge’s 9-0 pace.
Newport’s No 1 doubles team of Brittany Sturgess and Megan McKay
won one set and Vanessa Dunlap and Krista McIntosh each won a set in
singles for the Sailors.

Woodbridge 10, Newport Harbor 8
Singles -- Haxby (NH) lost to Exon, 0-6, lost to
Williams, 0-6, lost to Call, 3-6; McIntosh (NH) lost, 1-6, 1-6, won,
6-1; Dunlap (NH) lost, 0-6, 2-6, won, 6-4.
Doubles -- Sturgess-McKay (NH) lost to H. Hustedt-Rye,
2-6, def. Pao-C .Hustedt, 6-4, lost to Reeve-Thompson, 4-6;
Khoury-Olson (NH) won, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2; C. Adams-B. Adams (NH) won,
6-4, 6-3, 3-6.

GOLF: Newport girls KO Foothill
Led by medalist Amanda Campbell, who shot a personal-best 42 at
Big Canyon Country Club in her final regular-season match, the
Newport Harbor High girls golf team knocked off Sea View League
champion Foothill for the first time in league, 247-258, Thursday.
Campbell birdied hole 7 on the par-36 course and was followed by
freshman Natalie Draganza, who shot 43. Katie McKay fired a 53,
Kayleigh Horn shot 54 and Ashley Jacob and Rachel Kone both tallied
55’s for the Sailors, 8-2 in the Sea View League. Foothill is now
9-1.
“I was really pleased with our team,” said Sailors Coach Marianne
Towersey. “We’re peaking at the right time.”
Newport will compete in the CIF Individual finals that begin
Monday at 8:30 a.m. at San Juan Hills Golf Course in San Juan
Capistrano.

FIELD HOCKEY: Tars stop Marina, 3-0
Three different players scored goals and Newport Harbor field
hockey team finished the regular season undefeated with a 10-0-4
record in the Sunset League after beating host Marina Thursday, 3-0,
in Huntington Beach.
The Tars finish second behind Edison going into Tuesday’s start of
tournament play.
Kaley Nix and Ashley Gleason scored the first two goals off of
continuations of penalty corners in the first half and Ashley
Harrison added another goal in the second half with an assist by Nix
to seal the win.
Newport had 17 penalty corners to Marina’s three and led in shots
on goal, 18-4. Sailors’ goalkeeper Amanda Wittman made five saves,
all in the first half.
Midfielder Kerrie Gates had what Newport Coach Sharon Wolfe said
was her best game of the season, and Kristen Jendrusina, Kirsten
Chamberlain, Jill Whitfield, Rachel Furman and Dana Owad
distinguished themselves.
Newport’s junior varsity team finished the season 13-0-1 and atop
the Sunset League for the fourth straight season and will play either
Harvard-Westlake or Edison in a championship game Wednesday at 3 p.m.
at Pleasant View School in Huntington Beach, Wolfe said.

GOLF: Costa Mesa wins by five strokes
Costa Mesa High’s girls golf team was a 274-279 winner over
Estancia in Golden West League play at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club
Thursday, with Jean You and Jessica Bunnell sharing medalist honors
with 48s on the nine-hole, par-35 Mesa Linda course.
Backing up Mesa’s 1-2 punch were Rachel Hughes (56), Christian
Casale (61) and Lindsey Reed (61) as the Mustangs improved to 8-8,
6-4 in league.
Estancia’s game was led by Sarah Lambert (54). Others: Clarisa
Maygren (55), Charleen Montevon (56), Courtney Hess (56) and Evelyn
Flores (60).
Estancia is now 3-9, 1-9.

TENNIS: Corona del Mar romps, 16-2
Sophomore Jamie Steele did not drop a game, while junior Brittany
Holland lost just two in singles play with overwhelming sweeps in the
Corona del Mar High girls tennis team’s 15-2 Pacific Coast League
victory over visiting Calvary Chapel Thursday.
The Yelsey sisters, Anne and Rachel, as well as CdM doubles teams
of Courtney Carnahan and Jackie Manning, and Jennifer Way and Maggie
Souzzi also recorded three-set victories each. The Sea Kings improved
to 13-3, 8-1 in league.

TENNIS: Sage Hill a 16-2 winner
Sage Hill High’s girls tennis team shoved visiting Brethren
Christian aside in Academy League play Thursday, rolling to a 16-2
victory behind the freshman singles trio of Katie McKitterick, Kellie
Ammerman and Paige Fullmer, who all swept.
The Lightning finishes second in the Academy League with a 13-3,
10-2 record and is ranked No. 4 in CIF Division V as it awaits the
CIF Playoffs with seven freshman in the starting lineup.
Ammerman racked up a 45-2 record with 14 sweeps, McKitterick was
4-4 with 14 sweeps, and Fullmer is 37-11 with seven sweeps.

POLO: Eagles fall, 17-5, to Los Amigos
The Estancia High boys water polo team ran into a potent Los
Amigos squad in a high school boys water polo match Thursday and
lost, 17-5.
Jess Hellmich led the scoring for the Eagles with two goals and
Chad Kunert, Anthony Herman and Matt Metkovich each added one goal
apiece to round out the Eagles scoring.
