A man held a woman hostage at knifepoint for 20 minutes early this morning in Costa Mesa, police said.
Joseph Elden Oakes, 51, called police at 12:55 a.m. to an industrial park at the intersection of Randolph Avenue and Baker Street, police said. When they arrived, they found him holding a folding pocketknife to a woman’s throat in front of a building. Oakes talked to officers for about 20 minutes before they saw an opening and took him down with a Taser, police said. The woman sustained only minor cuts.
Police arrested Oakes on suspicion of making a terrorist threat, attempted murder, and kidnapping. He is being held at Orange County Jail on $503,000 bail, and will be arraigned at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach tomorrow.
